Due to our contacts with Lee Freedman and horse racing identities John O’Neil and Mark Pejic (former owners of the champion Mummify), Shane Crawford Racing was lucky enough to recently acquire a share in the champion racehorse Sphenophyta. Hailing from New Zealand, “The Phyta” as it is affectionately known, is out of Groom Dancer (USA) and Ballermoss (NZ) and until recently, was a lightly raced six year old.

Since being under the expert guidance of the Freedman Brothers, Sphenophyta quickly achieved a Group One win in the 2006 Turnbull Stakes and fifth place in the 2006 Caulfield Cup.

Whilst the name Sphenophyta is difficult to pronounce, it draws its meaning from its New Zealand heritage where Sphenophyta is a type of plant also known as ‘horsetails’.
